DOING WHAT YOU LOVE and profiting from it. 

After the conference, many got inspired and fired up to start up their businesses. They have heard many inspiring business folks speak about their success stories. Another business expert came up to talk about the importance of business plan, setting of goals, memorizing your elevator speech, defining your customer base, knowing your competitors, outshining your competitors raising money for business etc. 
There was something that got stuck in the heart of Jack. Along the line, the business expert, who was also a consultant for three different conglomerates emphasized the essentiality of “doing what you love.” He had exhausted his time and after a while, the conference was over. Jack wasn`t given the opportunity to ask the question pondering him about this last point that was just raised: doing what you love.

Jack went home, opened a restaurant which he named it after his pet – Billy Fries. Though customers didn`t come to patronize his fries, he was never bothered at all. He just kept doing what he loved when there was no sale for the day; Eating was his hobby. Jack went out of business after three weeks.

It is quite funny, isn’t it? Jack didn’t understand what the meaning of ‘Doing what you love.’ It would amaze you to know that many do not also understand this salient point in the business industry. 

Doing what we love shouldn`t be seen on the surface of life. We must take conscious effort to search our heart to know what that thing is 

Steve Zeitchik, founder and CEO of Focal Point Strategies, said that to do something you love, you have to first spend time thinking deeply about things that bring you enjoyment.

“Take a step back and figure out what it is that you enjoy doing, including as many specifics and details as possible,” Zeitchik added. Having a good relationship with God and connecting to the One who knows the blue print of our lives at this point should’nt be an option, but a necessity.  

Since I left college, most of the jobs I applied for were teaching jobs. I had opportunities on different occasions to apply for jobs in the banking industry, manufacturing industry and some other industries that paid handsomely, more than the teaching jobs I applied for. But deep down within me, I found much more fulfillment in the classroom, teaching and mentoring young folks than sitting down with figures and files all day. 

The next thing to do after knowing what you are passionate about is to know those who have been in the industry before you. Read the history of that industry, the present and keep updating your knowledge in the field. The essentialness of knowledge cannot be overemphasized. Knowledge is one of the difference between superiority and inferiority; substandard products and qualitative products; prosperity and knowledge. No amount of knowledge is too much when it comes to digging deep into what you love. It takes discipline and devotion to acquire enough knowledge.

In addition, you need to camp around those who have been in the industry. Surround yourself with those who would support you and find Mentors in the industry you`re entering. Oprah Winfrey said, “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself. A mentor is someone who allows you to know that no matter how dark the night, in the morning joy will come. A mentor is someone who allows you to see the higher part of yourself when sometimes it becomes hidden to your own view.”

Alyssa Gelbard, founder and President of career consulting firm, Resume Strategists said, “If you don’t know people well, initiating conversation via LinkedIn is a great way to start. Tell them you are making a career change and conducting research and due diligence to make a well-informed move.”

It`s unfortunate that many people stop at the level of soul searching, acquiring knowledge and having a strong will power to do what they love. They have not decided to launch out. They have not seen the need to leave the shore. It can be very risky launching out but that`s the only way to start up. Take realistic actions.

Make sure your passion has something to offer. For example, a service that is needed and demanded in the community or society at large. Don`t go into obsolete services. Make sure you also find out how to profit from your passion. Melanie Connellee, executive coach and President of business consulting company, MLC Group said that to turn something you love into a business, you have to determine how to make money from it. Adequate knowledge, mentoring in line with your business will aid you in this process. 

Lastly, you need to be ready physical and psychologically. Nothing good and worthwhile is easy from the onset. Prepare to exert much of your energy. That you`re doing what you love doesn`t mean it will not demand your energy and resources. You must be willing to pay the price and sacrifice to make your business standout.
